Hi, everybody.
(Hi, Doctor E!)
I’m sorry about not posting a post yesterday. There was nothing deep or symbolic going on; I was just out sick.
You may recall that I left the office early on Tuesday, but I needed to go in on Wednesday because of payroll. Well, by Wednesday evening, I was feeling really run down, and then by the time I got back to the house, I was starting to have some shaking chills and to spike a fever*. This is despite the fact that I already had/have constant antipyretics on board (NSAIDs and acetaminophen, for instances). So, though my fever never got very high‒just over a hundred I think‒that might translate into significantly higher without meds. Though we cannot be sure; it’s not necessarily a simple, linear effect.
Anyway, between that and general aches and malaise and a dry cough and whatnot, I stayed at the house yesterday.
Sometime during the night last night, my fever seems to have broken; certainly I woke up quite sweaty and my temperature reads as it normally does on my digital thermometer. So, now I am feeling a bit less ill, though I am by no means at my best, whatever that might be.
I don’t know, my best probably happened around the times of my kids’ births. Certainly those were the best events to happen in my life; few things even come close. Marrying my ex was pretty close, I guess, and what happened subsequently doesn’t change that fact.
I certainly wouldn’t go back and change it if I could. I would not change anything in my past‒even if I were given that power‒if it had the remotest chance to prevent my children from being born. That is non negotiable.
So, yeah, with some minor tangents, that’s a sort of summary of what happened yesterday that led to me not making a blog post. I will also not be posting tomorrow, because it is a day off work this week.
I was considering not working on this coming Monday, because it is Yom Kippur. I am not observant, but nevertheless, I almost always fast on the so-called Day of Atonement. I think it’s good for a person to do that from time to time. It’s a good sort of “reset” button, metabolically as well as mentally.
I certainly feel like I can use it. But I don’t necessarily take the day off work when fasting. And given that I’ve missed a day and a half over the last week, taking another day on Monday would probably trouble my conscience.
Anyway, maybe I’ll have some manner of spiritual epiphany during my fast. It’s unlikely, though. It’s never happened before. I think I would need to fast longer than 24 hours to be able to expect any kind of spiritual revelation. But who knows? It’s not impossible to experience some mental clarity and insight after just 24 hours without food or water.
Whatever the case, it’s not usually a bad thing for me to eat less.
Well, other than all that, I am not at all sure what to discuss today, and though I am recovering, I am still under the weather. So, I won’t try to introduce some other topic now, even in passing. I will, instead, draw this to a close for the day and for the week. I hope you all have had a better, or at least a healthier, week than I have had, and that you all have a good weekend, too.
Though I will be fasting, I plan to write a post on Monday, so you can look forward to that, if that’s the sort of thing to which you tend to look forward. Take care.
*Those two things are part of the same process. When you’re getting a fever, your body resets the target point of your internal thermostat; this is a real thing, and it lies primarily in your hypothalamus. So, all of a sudden, your body perceives that you are much less warm than you are supposed to be, and so you feel subjectively cold and can start to shiver, even as your core body temperature begins to rise. Indeed, the biological “purpose” of shivering is to make you warmer.

Cool, I didn’t know about the body temperature setpoint in the hypothalamus. Good thing you are taking antipyretics so you won’t catch fire! I didn’t know you couldn’t even drink water during the high hollidays.
Only for the 24 hours of Yom Kippur. And it’s made very clear that if this is dangerous to you in any serious way, you should not participate. The preservation of life supersedes all else, even the “commandments” such as Shabbat and so on.
