AI as detrimental enchancement

This is that audio I mentioned this morning (and yesterday morning).  I didn’t do a LOT of editing, just truncated the silences, reduced noise, and added a bit of reverb since after all the noise reduction it felt a bit dead.  I honestly don’t remember exactly what I said, though I remember the gist, and I don’t know whether I was coherent.  This is a bit of an experiment, just uploading without listening.  Enjoy.  Or don’t, if it’s not enjoyable, I won’t try to dictate your reaction.

  1. Interesting. Though it sort of sounds like you are talking in a tunnel a bit. But I would really focus on getting a windscreen for the mic.

Your general delivery and cadences remind me of Carl Sagan.

    Abacuses or…abaci? 🙂

    • Supposedly, the official plural would be abaci, but that’s weird because it’s Greek and the plural seems Latin. I am no scholar of the ancient tongues, however. And apparently abacuses is still more common.

      • Got it. Anyway, if AI were merely a smart assistant, that’s great. But if its ultimate goal is to render humanity and human activity superfluous, and if we are content to allow that to happen, that’s fairly detrimental I’d say.

  2. That was a short enough audio strip that I was able to hear it in its entirety. Interesting ways to think about this AI shit. Not to be ornery, but I’m REALLY sick of AI dominating every damn conversation. I don’t mean here on your blog. What you just did was lay out a very logical, interesting thought process. You’re right. It will make us soft. I’m picturing a society filled with fat, round, useless, purposeless (redundant, I know), unmotivated, uninspired, boring people rolliing from spot to spot. It disgusts me. I don’t give a damn, right now, about “medical advances” which is the one thing that’s consistently hurled in my face to shut me up when I say, “I don’t like it and I don’t want it”.
